Taking care of your mouth is essential for keeping it healthy, and preventing serious issues from occurring. A big part of your oral care routine is taken care of at home. According to the American Dental Association, or the ADA, you should brush your teeth at least twice a day, and floss at least once a day. While maintaining these habits is beneficial, they are not the only components. Another essential component of your oral health care regimen is regular dental visits for cleanings and exams. At Crossroads Family Dental, we can provide the care you need to optimize your oral health. Here is what you can expect from your first visit.
Upon entering the doors to our office for the very first time, you will be greeted by our reception staff. One of the staff members will provide you with all of the paperwork that you will need to fill out. This paperwork includes insurance information, if applicable, and information regarding your dental and medical histories. It is important that you arrive at least 15 minutes early to complete this paperwork.
When ready, one of our clinical staff members will bring you to the back to begin your exam. We will start by going over your dental and medical histories. During this time, we will also discuss if you have any fears, anxieties, or other oral health concerns that you will want to be addressed during your visit.
After going over your history, we will complete a thorough examination of your mouth. We will check the condition of your teeth, checking for signs of damages and cavities. We will examine your gums for signs of infections. Your comprehensive oral exam also consists of an oral cancer screening. During this screening, we will check the soft tissues of your mouth, checking for any abnormalities. Your face and neck are examined for signs of swelling. Any issues we find will be noted in your file.
As a first-time patient, we will need to take some digital X-rays. These images are essential for showing us the hidden structures of your mouth, including the roots of your teeth and the jawbone. We can see damage, infections, impacted teeth and other issues. Your digital X-rays complete the picture of your current oral health status and can tell us what your specific needs are.
Going Over Your Treatment Plan
After your digital X-rays have been taken, we will go over everything that we have found with you. If any issues have been spotted, we will discuss your treatment options with you. We will also discuss your long-term treatment plan, which will be designed to help provide you with optimal oral health. We can go over images and answer questions.
It is important to note that your first visit may or may not include cleaning. This will depend mainly upon when your last professional cleaning was. Based on your comprehensive exam, we will be able to create a cleaning plan that will provide you with the best possible results, and those cleanings often begin after the initial visit.
Your first visit to our office is designed for us to get to know you and for you to get to know us. It also gives us an opportunity to fully understand your needs and design a customized treatment plan that will optimize your oral health.
