CEREC Same Day Dental Crowns
Crossroads Family Dental is a family owned business which offers single visit restorations as one of our prime specialties. We do this through the Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics, or CEREC, a decades-old technology that changed the way restorations are performed today. With lasers and computer software, plus a milling machine, we can accurately replace the gap in your tooth in no time at all. You may have the choice of veneer, ceramic, and zirconia as the primary material for the crown, veneer, or dental implant.
Brief Background on the CEREC System
Not many people outside of dentistry heard about the CAD/CAM or the computer-aided design and computer aided manufacturing before the introduction of CEREC. The innovation revolutionized the whole discipline by reducing human error and increasing result time. Before this type of technology, the process of manufacturing veneers, crowns, bridges, and dental implants was left to lab technicians. These are specialists who fabricated the orthodontic restorations from the dental impression taken at our office. This fabrication took a much longer time, and it required the patient to leave the office until the restoration was complete. Then, they would come back to have the restoration cemented in place to help restore the look and functionality of your smile.
Using computer software, 3D imaging, and robotics, we can now do the job more accurately and with less time, right in the comfort of our office. That way, you can come in, have the procedure done, and go home with the restoration in place instead of waiting for a permanent solution. This is the reason why the patient does not have to visit the dentist a second time for restorations because of the CEREC technology.
CEREC was first pioneered by Dr. Werner Mörmann. It was first manufactured and distributed by Sirona Dental Systems in 2012. This company, however, has a long history since it has been around since 1877 when it was first launched in Erlangen, Germany.
The story will not be complete without introducing Dentists Supply Company, which was founded in New York City in 1899 and later became the Dentsply International. The two companies merged, and the first order of business was to make sure that CEREC became the byword in chairside dentistry. Ten years later and Dentsply Sirona achieved its goal. Back in 2012, the CEREC made its first billion in sales.
CAD/CAM itself has been in existence since the 1980s. However, it did not have wide applications in the field of dentistry simply because the technology was still in the early stages. The computers were just not strong enough to sustain the kind of power and accuracy the technology demanded.
That is no longer true today, of course. As the technology caught up with the novel idea, it has become more sustainable for dental practices to invest in CEREC as an integral part of the service.
Single Visit Restorations
Other dental practices that do not utilize CEREC technology require the patient to go on at least two visits. The first visit is when your tooth is being prepared for the crown or the onlay. This is also the time when you will be injected with anesthesia should you ever need it. The dentist will take the impression of your tooth, and a temporary filling will be placed to hide the gap.
The dentist will tell you when to come back, from a few days to as much as a week, when the permanent crown would have been finished. Then you sit in the chair of the dentist again and relive the experience again. The temporary tooth will be plucked out to be replaced with the permanent one.
Meanwhile, if you have an unhealthy fear of dentists as most people are, you would be anxious all week for the second visit.
CEREC Will Allow Us to Finish All That Work in Literally a Matter of Minutes!
Even today, some dentists still use amalgam fillings. Now, even if the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) found that they are safe for use for adults and kids six years old and above, there is something about the presence of mercury in the fillings that make patients uncomfortable.
With CEREC, however, we can mimic the look and even some of the characteristics of your teeth. With the ceramic materials and the advances in the manufacturing, the restored tooth will “breathe” just like your natural teeth do. It will expand when introduced to hot food or drink, and contract when it comes into contact with cold beverage and food.
We strive to give you the correct and accurate information with regards to the CEREC procedure. We are also duty bound to provide you with alternative methods of restorations. The main purpose, of course, is to make you understand that there are more ways than one to your problem.
Ultimately, the decision on which procedure to undertake will depend solely on you.
The Science Behind CEREC
We live in a technologically driven society. Technology has been used to make our lives, not only easier but also better. By now, we are sure you have heard about the 3D printed materials that can be used for everything from cars to houses. The CEREC works pretty much on the same principle. The dental impression that we take from your teeth will be converted into a digital image and fed into the computer software. The machine will then fabricate the tooth through the complex mathematical formula resulting from the list of commands we input into the CEREC. As you can see, we are taking human fallibility out of the equation.
From the time we transfer the digital image to the time the machine will produce the final output will only take about 15 minutes. We will then chemically bond the new crown to your tooth.
The preparation of your tooth is pretty much the same. We make sure all the plaque and decay are gone from the outside.
If you did your research, you might come across some reservations regarding the use of CEREC, specifically the misconception that it can never match the types of crowns or inlays and onlays produced by traditional labs.
In some ways, there is truth to the statement, but only if the dental clinic relies too much on the CEREC for the polishing and tainting.
However, we have extensive experience in the traditional restoration process. It is not too much of a stretch to say that dental technicians are artisans in the way they can replicate the natural appearance of the teeth of the patient to make sure the restoration blends seamlessly after bonding.
We specialize in restoration of decayed pearly whites in conspicuous areas. For example, any discoloration on the crown of your front teeth is bound to stand out. We must play around with the different shades to get the color just right and giving you that perfect smile in the process.
Our experts can also restore and replace the defective amalgam fillings while giving you better alternatives in the process. Fillings are supposed to be replaced every 10 to 15 years because their quality continues to deteriorate every year.
The CEREC is also the ideal system for temporary crowns because we can make exact restorations through the accurate measurements from the digital impressions. The margin, or the gap between the crown and the natural tooth, is insignificant. This means that you will have peace of mind that the temporary crown will stay in place because of the tight fit.
Things to Consider When Looking at CEREC
Many people believe there will be quite the cost difference between a traditional crown and a CEREC crown. There might be a bit of difference, but it is not as large as you may think. On average, the cost of the procedure will range between $400 and $800, or more, per crown, but the final cost depends on many different factors. The condition of the tooth you need to replace, the location of the specific tooth that needs a crown, what material your dental crown is made out of, and how much prep work each tooth needs before getting the crown all factor into how much your dental crown will cost.
Even our current patients had a hard time believing that it will not cost them that much under the CEREC system. We invested in the CEREC machine because we saw its benefits from the start. We saw how it would improve your ability to get a crown right when you need it, without the traditional wait and second office visit. We do not think that you should spend time in our dental any longer than necessary. We know that you have important things to do in your life. Let us help get your dental crown taken care of as quickly as possible by opting to get a CEREC dental crown.
Since everything is done in-house, we can decrease the overall costs of the procedure. That decreases how much each crown will cost, meaning you will have lower out of pocket expenses. Most dental insurance policies will cover a portion of dental crowns. However, their cap is often around 50%. If you want to find out how much your specific insurance policy will cover, call our office and have us check for you. We work with several insurance companies, so we can call and find out what type of coverage you have and what your expenses will be for any of the treatments you may require.
