Are There Times Where Medium Bristles Are Better than Soft?
Posted on 6/21/2021 by Crossroads Family Dental
You have likely heard that you should always use a toothbrush with soft bristles. This is because hard bristles can damage your gums and even wear down the enamel on your teeth. However, there are medium bristled toothbrushes available. They are a medium stiffness that some people may feel more comfortable using than soft-bristled brushes. But are medium bristles as damaging to your teeth as hard ones, or is there a time when they are better than soft ones?
Medium Bristles Do Clear Away More Plaque
Studies have found that medium bristles do actually clear away more plaque than soft-bristled toothbrushes do. This means if you have a lot of build-up on your teeth, using a medium bristle toothbrush will help. The bristles do scrape off more plaque and other built-up debris, though they do not remove as much as hard bristles do.
However, They Also Damage the Gums
Like hard-bristled toothbrushes, though, medium bristles can easily damage your gums. Even if you do not brush using much pressure, there is still a risk of hurting your gums by using anything other than a soft-bristled toothbrush. If you are prone to gingivitis, a medium bristle brush can easily cause your gums to bleed when you brush. Even if you have healthy gums, using this type of toothbrush can damage them.
The Best Option
While using a medium bristled toothbrush may remove a little more plaque than a soft-bristled one, the damage to your gums is too much of a risk. If your gums bleed often, it is easy for bacteria to get into the tissue and cause infections. Instead, it is safer to always use a soft bristle brush and come see us every six months for a cleaning. We will make certain any plaque on your teeth is removed.
