The Worst Mistakes You Can Make While Flossing

Posted on 5/10/2021 by Crossroads Family Dental
The Worst Mistakes You Can Make While FlossingWhile you should floss your teeth, you may do more harm than good if you do not know the correct way to floss your teeth. Therefore, you can always check with us if you happen to be unsure about whether or not you are flossing properly.

Flossing Too Aggressively

Some patients run into problems when they floss their teeth with too much force. If you do this, you can scratch your gums, which can lead to an infection. While cleaning plaque is important, you do not need to scrape your teeth vigorously. Instead, you should gently glide the floss between the teeth to clean all the residue and debris. You do not need to be forceful. Just guide the floss between the teeth with a soft sawing motion. When you reach the gum line, curve the string into a “C” shape against the tooth. Gently slide it into the space before rubbing the side of the tooth, using up-and-down motions.

Using a Water Flosser but Not Using Regular Floss

If you would like to use a water flosser as a supplement to flossing, that is fine. However, you should not use the device to replace regular flossing. You need to floss once a day, as doing so will help you get in-between the teeth to remove floss or stuck food. The water flosser can be used to supplement this type of care.

Using the Wrong Floss for Your Teeth

Some patients use the wrong floss for their bite. Floss may shred if you cannot get it between the teeth easily. In this case, you should choose a waxed floss, as you can more easily guide it between teeth that sit closer together in the mouth.

Again, you need to speak to us if you are not sure about flossing. We can show you how to floss properly. Give us a call today if you have any oral health questions or would like to book an appointment.
