Posted on 9/7/2020 by Crossroads Family Dental
Does it Hurt Your Teeth When You Open-Mouth Breathe? Most of our visitors are surprised when they learn from our dentists about the differences between closed-mouth breathing and open-mouth breathing. Many of them are even shocked to learn about the long term problems that open-mouth breathing can lead to, especially in teeth and gums. But once there is awareness, we often observe, there is behavioral change.

What Happens When You Open-Mouth Breathe?

Nasal breathing is the natural form of intake of oxygen and release of carbon dioxide. When you breathe through your nose, the nasal system also acts as a filter to block minute specks that may cause you harm. It also moistens the air you breathe in, an act that helps your lungs. A blockage in your nose can force you to breathe through your mouth, especially when you sleep. When you open-mouth breathe when asleep, there is a difference in the intake of oxygen and you could wake up with dryness in the mouth, fatigue, bad breath, just to name a few conditions.

How Does Open-Mouth Breathing Affect Teeth?

Breathing through your mouth leads to dryness in the mouth. It's important for your gums to be moisturized and when there is dryness there, it leads to inflammation. Breathing through your mouth can also lead to infections in the mouth, increasing the chances of plaque formation, which could prove detrimental to your dental health. It has also been found to disturb teeth alignment, that could lead to uneven bites and misshapen tooth lines.

What Can We Do About Open-Mouth Breathing?

There are trained dental professionals in our facilities who have experience dealing with open-mouth breathing. Our doctors advise you to take it with the utmost seriousness. If your children often breathe through their mouth, especially when sleeping, as it can lead to certain serious conditions later. After a thorough examination, our dentists will advise you on a course of action that may involve medication and procedures, if needed.
