How to Tell When It's Time to Get a Filling Replaced
Posted on 7/7/2020 by Crossroads Family Dental
It is common for people to have dental fillings, a staggering 90 percent of adults in the United States have had a cavity at some point in their lives leaving dental fillings one of the most common dental treatments. Fillings don't last forever, however, and there are signs that you should be aware of so you know when to get them replaced.
You Feel Pain Where The Filling Is
If you are feeling pain or discomfort where you got dental fillings, it could be a number of things. It is possible to develop a cavity under the filling, it is also possible that your dental filling wasn't sealed properly, and lastly, the filling could have cracked. It is important to act if you are feeling pain before the problem gets worse with infection or more cavities popping up.
The Filling Has Fallen Out
This will be the most telling sign that you should get your fillings replaced. If your dental filling has fallen out, you should get a new one as soon as you can. You can call us to schedule an appointment in a short amount of time. In the meantime, you can use a piece of sugar-free gum to shield the exposed tooth or use dental cement.
Your Filling Has Changed Appearance
As mentioned above, dental fillings don't last forever. If you have composite resin as your filling material, it will eventually turn darker in color once it gets to a certain age; usually 6-7 years or less. If your resin fillings are that old, you should have them replaced regardless as it is only a matter of time before the above examples may happen.
If you feel like you need a replacement filling, or you need fillings in general, don't hesitate to call us during our open office hours and schedule an appointment with us.
