Implant Crown Restorations Schererville IN
Tooth loss has numerous effects on your oral health, your appearance, and your confidence. Missing teeth affect your ability to eat and speak. Unable to properly chew your food, your digestion, and overall nutrition, suffer. People may have a harder time understanding you when you talk. Your smile is diminished, and you may become self-conscious. Along with all of these effects, your jawbone begins to change shape. Without the teeth in your jaw to stimulate the bone, fewer nutrients are sent. Your jawbone resorbs. Your facial shape changes and your remaining teeth can shift from their natural positions, causing a whole host of other issues. Dental implants are the latest option available for replacing missing teeth. While designed to be a permanent solution, the ceramic crowns used to replace your missing teeth can sometimes get damaged or break. At Crossroads Family Dental, we can restore damaged or broken crowns, giving you back the functions of your mouth and the appearance of your smile.
What are dental implants?
Dental implants are small titanium rods that are surgically implanted into your jaw. Your jawbone fuses to the implants as you heal from surgery, a process called osseointegration. Once you have fully healed, the implants essentially become "roots" that support your replacement teeth. Implants can be used to replace any number of missing teeth, from a single tooth to an entire arch. The number of implants required to support your missing teeth depends upon the number of teeth you are missing and the condition of your jawbone.
Implants offer several benefits. Not only do they restore the functions of your missing teeth, but they also restore the appearance of your smile. The ceramic crowns that are used to fill in the empty spaces mimic the properties of your natural teeth, including their color and light reflection. The rods help to maintain the shape of your jawbone by maintaining its strength and health. Dental implants are also typically a permanent restoration for missing teeth. However, there are sometimes when the crowns may be damaged, and they will need to be replaced.
The Importance of Replacing Damaged Crowns
While ceramic crowns are fairly strong and can withstand most normal daily use, the material is not indestructible. There are several reasons your implant crowns may be damaged:
Replacing damaged or broken crowns as soon as possible is important. Damaged crowns can cause several different issues. Jagged edges can cut sensitive oral tissues. You may experience a significant amount of pain. The functions of your mouth may be impacted. Your smile may also be affected.
How are your crowns replaced?
The process for replacing damaged dental implant crowns is similar to the process for placing your original crowns. First, however, we need to replace your damaged crowns. Next, we take impressions of your mouth. These impressions are sent to our lab, where your custom crowns are created. It can take up to two weeks for your crowns to be completed so that we will provide you with temporary crowns in the meantime. When your crowns are ready, we will set them in place over your implant screws. While we can replace your crowns, we cannot redrill or replace implant screws. If your implant screws are damaged or missing, we will refer you to an oral surgeon.
It is essential that damaged or broken dental crowns be replaced as soon as possible. If the crowns on your dental implants have been damaged, contact Crossroads Family Dental to schedule your appointment today.
