The Goal of Preventive Dentistry

The main goal of preventive dentistry is to keep cavities, gum disease, sensitivity issues, and other common conditions from becoming major concerns. Preventive dentistry benefits patients of all ages, but especially children. Early cleanings and exams will help us eliminate and diagnose bacteria buildup and tooth development issues—giving your child a strong dental foundation that will follow them into adulthood.

The Importance of Professional Cleanings

Bacteria found in plaque (a thin biofilm that constantly forms on and around your teeth), is the main cause of tooth decay and gum disease. When plaque builds up, it calcifies into tartar and becomes much more difficult to remove. During a professional cleaning, our dental hygienist will use a special tool to remove plaque and tartar from the surface of your teeth, both above and below the gumline. Your teeth are also polished to remove minor stains and improve cosmetics.

Professional cleanings are necessary for two main reasons—to prevent tooth loss, and prevent systemic diseases that affect your overall health. If the bacteria in your mouth is left unchecked, it will begin to produce acids that eat away at tooth enamel and lead to infection. When enamel is lost, your teeth become vulnerable to structural instability and nerve damage. When your body’s immune system responds to infection, it produces toxins that are detrimental to the bone and tissue surrounding your teeth (gum disease). Long-term gum disease will cause chronic activation of the immune system, which can weaken your body’s response to diseases in the rest of your body. Preventing gum disease can significantly reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, and other serious conditions.

Education is also a big part of your cleaning. Our hygienist will identify any problematic areas of your mouth, and give you a quick review on proper brushing and flossing techniques. Proper daily care can help keep your mouth disease-free and healthy in between visits.

What to Expect During a Dental Exam

During a dental exam, Dr. Kathy Zuccarelli or Dr. Nicholas Berns will evaluate the overall state of your oral health. This includes:
•  Assessing your risk of tooth decay, gum disease, and bone disease.
•  Assessing your bite and jaw for complications.
•  Assessing your need for restorative treatment.
•  Examining the fit of existing prosthetic replacements.
•  Assessing your need for fluoride treatment.
•  Performing diagnostic procedures, such as x-rays.
•  Reviewing your dental and medical history.
•  Addressing bad habits, such as smoking and poor diet.
•  Screening for oral cancer.

Scheduling dental exams at regular intervals will give us the chance to detect problems early when they are most treatable. For most patients, biannual visits are ideal. Patients with little risk of tooth decay or gum disease may be fine with a visit once a year. Inversely, patients at high risk for dental diseases may need to schedule an appointment every three or four months. During your visit, ask Dr. Kathy Zuccarelli or Dr. Nicholas Berns about the state of your mouth, and the recommended length between visits.
