Why You Need to Time How Long You Brush
Posted on 6/13/2018 by Crossroads Family Dental
Brushing your teeth twice daily with a soft bristle brush is one of the most important things you can do for your oral health.
You can create a schedule that works for you and as long as you brush twice within a 24-hour period, that part of your oral health is covered. But why you need to time how long you brush? The two- minute rule has been one that most dentists promote.
This gives you enough time to take each section of the mouth and do a thorough job. It's hard to believe that most Americans don't come even close to brushing for two-minutes. Whether they're in a rush to get to work or too tired at night, brushing their teeth for two-minutes seems like a long time.
There are ways you can make sure you're brushing for the recommended amount of time.
Use a Timer
This can be especially important for small children who are just learning how to care for their teeth. There are several fun options to make teeth brushing interesting. For adults, the timer on your phone should work well if you want to time how long you brush each time. Once you get into the habit of dividing your mouth and brushing all the teeth's surface, you can probably ditch the timer.
Use a Soft Bristle Toothbrush
Many people bleed while brushing and it's not from gum disease or gingivitis but from putting too much pressure on the brush head. Remember to choose a toothbrush with soft bristles that won't damage the tooth surface or gums. When brushing, you just need to gently go around the mouth cleaning with circular or up and down motion.
If you have questions about proper brushing technique, our staff will be happy to show you how to do it right.
