Maintaining New Fillings is Important

Dental Fillings Crossroads Family Dental IN 46375-1360Maintaining New fillings is important because you want them to last for years. After the procedure, it will take a while for the numbing sensation from the anesthetic to wear off and you will feel how that filling feels in your mouth and how it affects your bite.

Some adjustments may be necessary to make if feel comfortable, but you should always follow proper care at home. Here are some things you need to do to extend the life of your new filling as much as possible.

Avoid Chewing Hard Food

Once you are ready to have a meal after getting a new filling, you should avoid chewing on hard or sticky foods. No hard candy or things such as nuts are advisable. While the resin used for the filling is made of strong material to last, it can still be vulnerable to cracks if not cared for properly.

Teeth Sensitivity

Sensitivity to hot or cold food is very common following a dental filling procedure and could last anywhere from several days to several weeks. If you are concerned about increased sensitivity after a week or so, please call our office. The tooth will be more sensitive depending on the severity of the cavity or crack.

Keep the Area Clean
The most important thing you can do to prevent any problems with your new filling is to keep the area and your mouth clean. As with anything else, brushing twice daily, and flossing, plus a bi-annual visit to our office will help protect and care for all your fillings.

While the filling will be made to match your teeth color, you will notice a difference because the filling is not going to fit exactly as the tooth fit before. You will feel a difference in the bite, but you should get used to this relatively quickly. Any concerns should be addressed with our office.
